As the bathroom has become one of the key rooms in the home where you can really relax and unwind, it should provide the perfect place to create a statement scheme. And there are plenty of options open to you, especially if you are working with a blank canvas. From elegant roll-top baths with the ‘wow factor’ to striking, walk-in wet rooms,
the choice is yours.

Create the ‘wow factor’
Depending on the space you are working with, you will need to consider what your focal point in this room is going to be. Placing a tub, which is large enough for two, in the centre of your bathroom or alongside a window, is bound to make a statement. But make sure your floor will be sturdy enough to take the weight of the bath you choose, especially when it is filled with water. His and hers basins will also look the part in a more opulent setting. A free-standing shower will give dramatic impact, especially if placed at an angle in one corner of a room and glistening chrome fixtures and fittings in every bathroom will immediately give off an air
of splendour.

Fabulous accessories
If you don’t happen to have any period features in your bathroom, don’t be disheartened, you can still inject some fabulous theatre with colours, fabrics and accessories. Chandeliers will always bring a lavish, feminine feel to a room: just ensure they’re hung properly by an expert. They don’t have to cost a fortune either with most high street lighting shops now stocking less expensive versions. Heavy curtains can make an impression too, especially when separating an en suite from your bedroom.
If your room is well-ventilated, go for a rich velvet and if you’re worried about moisture, great effects can be achieved with an all-around shower curtain. Whatever you choose, accentuate those high ceilings with big mirrors, curtains, cornicing or lighting, because it’s drawing attention to the height that will truly create a sensation.
Colour me beautiful
Colour is a matter of personal choice but in a  bathroom, you can use it in a subtle manner for a more elegant look. Statement scheme or not,  use accessories in a particular shade to create a contrast against neutral sanitaryware. Pink towels and flannels, for example, will work well for more feminine appeal while dark wood seating and shelving provides a stronger backdrop against an otherwise sleek, white bathroom setting.
Floor and wall tiles work well if these are kept simple and neutral although patterned floor tiles will provide immediate dramatic impact and can work really well in a traditional home.

Finishing touches

Finally, make your bathroom a space you can relax in with a cohesive scheme. Try to match the materials you’ve already used to create a seamless flow. If you’ve chosen a vibrant sofa, why not match the tones with the walls using patterned paper on one wall and tiles on another, in one shade for elegant appeal.
If your property’s listed and building work is needed, check whether planning permission is necessary first. But remember, you really can‘t be too indulgent as, after all, this is your space, your statement and your bathroom.
